Objective: To gather information, prepare and deliver news stories about a variety of subject areas for WCBS-TV’s New York Metro area viewers.

Responsibilities:

•Must be a professional who can communicate compelling, credible and accurate stories on our-air.

•Covers news events, sporting events, always cultivates sources, writes stories and prepares for daily newscasts.

•Researches information for accuracy

•Generates enterprising and relevant story ideas and follows through the production and reporting of the same.

•Reports live from various locations even under difficult work/weather conditions.

•Gathers sound for stories as needed.

News Reporter

SUMMARY: Present the news on the air following the format and instructions of the News Director, Producer or other supervisors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

* Must be skilled and experienced in interviewing newsmakers and in gathering, writing and reporting the news, with an emphasis on the people the news affects.

* Must be familiar and proficient in the preparation of news scripts.

* Must be experienced in live reporting for multiple shows throughout the day.

* May be assigned to prepare and assist in the production and airing of specials, documentaries and the production of the news program.

* Develop and maintain news sources throughout the community.

* Objective interviewing, computer desk-top editing (video/audio), clear and unbiased writing.

The station requests that reporters make public appearances during off duty hours, and at all times represent KTVU news in a positive and professional manner.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in Journalism. Minors in Television and English preferred. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and news stories in a concise, balanced manner free of bias, distortion or poor taste. Must have language skills to handle live reporting, interviewing and ad-lib situations from the field using ENG equipment in an orderly, professional manner.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must be thoroughly professional in all aspects of journalism. Must be well read on current affairs and have a wide-range working knowledge and understanding of general interest subjects, current events and people in the news.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: AFTRA union membership required.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Use of two-way radio, telephone and iNEWS computer system. May be required to travel. As an on-air personality and journalist, must have that unique ability to communicate that creates for the viewer a feeling of involvement, sincerity, professionalism, authority, knowledge, enthusiasm and friendliness. Must be knowledgeable and well read about current events and people in the news.
